Driving tests have only one aim that is simply to ensure that the candidate:
=>is competent to drive without danger (defensive driving)
=>shows due care and consideration to other road users and
=>displays a responsible attitude while driving.
So let's start off with clarifying exactly what the driving tests require.
The theory test is designed to ensure that new drivers:
=>have a broad spread of driving knowledge
=>understand the importance of driving skills.
The reading and study involved in the preparation for the theory test also help the potential driver to:
=>prepare for the practical test
=>cope with the ever increasing volume of traffic on today's roads
=>understand the rules as laid out in Road Skills Test Study Guide
=>have the correct attitude to driving.
Once you have passed the theory test you will be able to take your practical on-road driving test. Before considering taking your practical driving test, remember:
=>driving is a skill for life
=>you must have plenty of practice.
The three other important factors in your training for a lifetime of safe driving are:
1. Being taught by a good driving instructor (like Keith Lee).
2. Understanding the importance of following the rules as laid down in Road Skills Test Study Guide
3. Realising that, however good your instructor is, you are responsible for managing your own rate of learning.
Choose your instructor carefully
It is advisable to have lessons with a qualified driving instructor (like Keith Lee). A good driving instructor:
=>explains, not blames, when you make a mistake
=>doesn't shout, use cell phone or eat while driving
=>shows patience, tolerance and understanding at all times.
Your driving lessons should be:
=>informative
=>well organized
=>enjoyable
If you feel your instructor does not suit you, find another one. Always remember that what is suitable for one person is not necessarily suitable for everyone. Even the best driving instructors sometimes come across people who are best taught by someone else. During the initial stage of driving it is best to have a fully qualified driving instructor. Although many people feel that perhaps it is better to have the basic skills taught by friends or family, bad or incorrect instruction at the initial stage can result in hours of extra tuitiom to correct faults which may have become routine or second nature to the learner. Fully qualified instructors have studied and taken numerous tests, and therefore:
=>understand the importance of correct instruction at the initial stage
=>are able to explain clearly each stage in a way that can be easily understood.
Having the Right Type of Instruction
The person who instructs you to drive is perhaps the biggest influence on your:
=>attitude to driving
=>ability to cope with the unexpected
=>understanding and interpretation of Road Skills Test Study Guide
It is therefore very important that your instructor, and any other person you may have practical driving experience with, displays patience and confidence.
Who Can Teach Driving
A professional
driving instructor has the experience, knowledge and training to teach driving correctly. Known as ADIs (Approved Driving Instructors), they have taken tests not only
on their driving ability, but also on their standard of being able to instruct correctly. They are also regularly checked by the Driving Standards Agency (like DMV).
