Taking the Theory Test
Preparing for the Theory Test

The theory test is straightforward, but you do have to be prepared. The questions are designed to test your knowledge of road safety. The topics covered include:

alertness
attitude
safety and your vehicle
safety margins
hazard awareness
vulnerable road users
other types of vehicle
vehicle handling
motorway rules
rules of the road
road and traffic signs
documents

There are 35 questions on the paper and if you answer 30 or more correctly you will pass. You will have 40 minutes to complete the test.

Ensuring You Are Ready for the Practical Test

Before taking your practical test you need to have:

plenty of practice
confidence in your ability to handle the car in all types of traffic situations.

It is very important that a learner driver does not just learn and practise their driving only on test routes. (These are routes which the instructor thinks are likely to be encountered on the actual driving test.)

The wider the variety of roads and traffic conditions you encounter while learning to drive, the more you will feel:

confident during the test
able to cope with unexpected hazards
capable of correcting any minor mistakes you may make.

Remember the criteria of the test are that you:

drive consistently well and with confidence
drive without assistance or guidance from anyone
can do parallel parking (or reverse parking) with minimum errors
display consideration and courtesy to other road users at all times.
